MKCCM CITY CENTRE OPERATIONS UPDATE
Highways
For CMK 22 enquiries were dealt with in November 2011 & 21 enquiries dealt with in December 2011. 36 repairs were made in total over November & December, by the Highways Operations Team following either enquiries, inspections or improvements for the Red Bull event. In addition, 10 enquiries were resolved, 10 enquiries did not require the operations team to repair but covered other issues e.g. notices to utility companies, grit bins, or advice given to customers.
Landscaping
23 shrub beds were cut back prior to the red Bull Home run event on Midsummer Boulevard between Saxon Gate and Elder Gate. 57 trees were either crown lifted or had epicormic growth removed (shoots at the base or low down on the trunk). 7 Landscape enquiries were received for CMK and all have been resolved by the operations team. They were mainly relating to overhanging vegetation and sight line issues. A crew continues with Winter bed work (cutting back and tidying shrub beds) in CMK until late January.
Tree Management
54 trees in CMK require removal; these have been indentified as being dead, dying or dangerous and therefore pose an unacceptable level of risk to the public or trees that will not contribute further to the landscape such as very poor formed trees. MKC will be replacing 74 trees back in to CMK in many of the locations where they have been removed as well as locations where they have not been replanted in the past. The reason that MKC will not be replacing all removed trees in CMK is due to the following factors:
- Where trees have been removed for thinning purposes or thinning will be taking place in the near future
- Where trees will block sight lines for CCTV surveillance
- Where utility services pass too close to planting pits
- Where tree planting would block sightlines at road junctions and pedestrian crossings
The replanting and removal work commenced 9 January but is dependent on weather conditions. Species have been chosen in line with the CMK Handbook - if the species of tree is not in the CMK handbook and the trees location forms part of an avenue then the same species of that avenue will be replanted.
Pavement Repairs
A team has been working in CMK to fix all of the granite kerbs, concentrating mainly on the dislodged granite kerbs in the bell mouth’s of the service roads and central reservation areas. Works started in December and is an ongoing programme.
Leaf Fall Clearance
The extra resources put in by Serco to clear leaves came to an end before at Christmas. Any further problems with leaves will be cleared by the city centre crew. Final figures for the leaves collected and composted are 739.3 tonnes over the whole borough, beating last year’s total of 485.6 tonnes. The amount from CMK was 105.7 tonnes.
Community Payback
Community payback have undertaken preparatory work on railings on Midsummer Boulevard and Silbury Boulevard, ready for painting when the weather is warmer.
